OVERVIEW

The Ever-Changing Electronic Payment

The last 20 years have seen giant steps in electronic payments. Some of today’s electronic payment vendors were asked what they thought were the most useful advancements in recent years.

feierstein matthew“The development and proliferation of payment software services, from payment gateways to more full-featured SAAS offerings,” said Matthew Feierstein, president and COO of PaySimple. “These products have created greater access and efficiency in electronic payment capabilities to businesses, greatly simplifying their ability to collect customer payments. As a close second, I would say mobile technology. While it's been slow to catch on in North American markets, I do believe we will see more and more people paying with mobile or wearable devices, making the problem of not having cash or even your wallet to make a purchase a non-issue.”

The ability to cater to an on-the-go culture seems to be a universally appreciated development in recent years. The power of convenience can be a helpful tool when a consumer is on the fence about payment.

hodges travis“The most useful development in electronic payments within the last 20 years is the ability to process credit cards and checks via mobile devices,” said Travis Hodges, senior e-business specialist at PDC4U. “With this ability companies have become able to perform face-to-face payments via swiper and or consumer web payments from anywhere at any time.”

Data security has always been paramount in electronic payments but frequent data breaches with major retailers over the past year have drawn even more attention from the public. This level of scrutiny has led agencies to search for ways to improve security.

“One of the most important things an agency can do to protect their consumers is to offload their risk to companies that are designed to handle the secure data for them on external systems in a PCI level 1 compliant environment,” said Hodges.

Feierstein recommends keeping all payment information in one place and not scattered around a collection office.

“Use a system that securely stores not just payment accounts but customer's PII (personally identifiable information) data as well,” said Feierstein. Once in place, collection agencies can feel comfortable when following proper security practices by leaving all sensitive information stored in the system, and not laying around in file folders on a hard drive or on a desk.”

Looking forward to the next 20 years, it’ s safe to assume that security will continue to be a major concern. However, one area of electronic payments that has already surprised many in its growing popularity is alternative payments. Starbucks reports that 14% of U.S. payments are made via mobile phone.

“Businesses (especially small) are really putting pressure on lowering the cost of accepting electronic payments,” said Feierstein. “Alternative options will come into play that may start to replace traditional bankcard transactions if they are able to provide consumers with the same security and convenience. That’s really the key: winning over consumer preference.”
