It's called tolling, and it has no relation to the tolls charged to cross a bridge or travel on a turnpike. Tolling is a legal doctrine associated with delaying the period of time set forth in a statute of limitations. It can affect things like the service of process, court proceedings, or court filings.
In response to Covid-19, at this count 7 states are tolling their statutes of limitation. They are:
- Connecticut: Suspended indefinitely
- Iowa: 48 days
- Louisiana: At least until Monday April 13th
- Massachusetts: Through April 21st
- New York: Through April 19th
- Oklahoma: 30 days for any civil case
- Texas: Through May 1st.
